Residency Opportunity: Undisciplinary

Arts Catalyst and The Otolith Collective are launching Undisciplinary, a new residency supporting three UK-based artists, curators and cultural practitioners.


At a time when the cracks and fault lines of contemporary neoliberal society are becoming more visible, how can we, as cultural producers, address notions of power, access and equity? And how can these macropolitics shape the micropolitics of the field we inhabit – the visual arts?
 
Emerging artists, artist collectives, curators, cultural practitioners and writers whose research focuses on critical issues in global perspectives of the 21st century are invited to apply. We are particularly interested in hearing from practitioners whose research addresses the politics of ecology, gender and race, contemporary activist struggles and from those engaged with rethinking genres of the human in relation to the Black radical tradition.
 
Piloting from April 2019, this month-long residency will provide learning, networking and mentoring opportunities as well as a critical framework for challenging existing structures that underlie artistic and cultural production. 
 
The three residents will have the opportunity to
Shape both individually and collectively the Undisciplinary programme together with Arts Catalyst and The Otolith Collective, while directly informing its design and delivery
Participate in and nurture a supportive network of artists, curators and organisations
Receive 1:1 mentoring and support around specific projects and/or their broad practice
Access Arts Catalyst and The Otolith Collective's network of artists, curators, institutions, academic and scientists
Present and share elements of their individual and/or collective inquiry process by co-curating a resource room at Arts Catalyst in April 2019
Be supported in testing out different forms of presentation including writing, broadcasting, public programme, performance
 
A number of partner organisations will be involved to provide further opportunities for residency participants.
 
There is no expected exhibition at the end of the residency rather, a desire to develop a platform for the research through seminars, screenings, podcasts, a reading room etc.
 
A dedicated research space will be available at Arts Catalyst throughout April 2019. We encourage the three residents to be active in the space during this period. 
 
 
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants should be UK-based and have been out of formal education for at least one year. 
 
We welcome in particular applications from artists and curators from BAME backgrounds. 
 
In order to apply please send us an expression of interest including / explaining:
A summary of your research proposal, (250 words max)
A full research proposal, including how you think this residency could help you expand your practice (700 words max)
How you plan to approach your research, (400 words max)
CV (2 pages max)
Supporting material, dependent on your practice; 10 images maximum, 3 video clips (max length of all clips - 5 min), writings / text
 
Deadline: Sunday 3 February at 11.59pm
The application should be sent in the form of one single PDF to opportunities@artscatalyst.org.
 
Successful applicants will be notified by 15 February. 
 
Costs and finance:
Successful applicants will receive £1000, which breaks down as bursary fee of £600 and £400 for research, such as visiting mentors, inviting speakers 
 
Arts Catalyst is a contemporary art organisation focused on transdisciplinary art and inquiry. It commissions and produces projects, artworks and exhibitions that connect with other fields of knowledge, expanding artistic practice into domains associated with science and specialist research. Arts Catalyst has commissioned more than 160 artists' projects, including major new works by Tomás Saraceno, Aleksandra Mir, Ashok Sukumaran, Otolith Group, and Critical Art Ensemble. Arts Catalyst's Centre in King's Cross, London, is a hub for the organisation's work, nationally and internationally, providing a space for developing new projects and co-inquiries connecting local interests with wider planetary issues.
 
The Otolith Collective expands on the work of The Otolith Group, which was founded in 2002 by Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshunin. It is a curatorial public platform through which exhibition-making, artists' writing, workshops, publication, and teaching are aimed at developing close readings of images and sounds in contemporary society. Approaching curation as an artistic practice of building intergenerational and cross-cultural platforms, the collective has been influential in critically introducing particular works of artists such as Chris Marker, Harun Farocki, Anand Patwardhan, Etel Adnan, Black Audio Film Collective, Sue Clayton, Mani Kaul, Peter Watkins, and Chimurenga in the UK, US, Europe, and Lebanon.

Hilma af Klint, Frans Hals

Episode No. 363 features curators Tracey Bashkoff and Lawrence W. Nichols.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York is showing "Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future," a survey of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944). The exhibition features more than 170 of af Klint's artworks with a focus on the artist's most significant period, from 1906–20, when her interest in spirtualism helped push her toward non-objective imagery.  It is the first major solo exhibition of af Klint's work in the United States. Tracey Bashkoff curated the exhibition with assistance from David Horowitz. It will be on view through April 23, 2019. The exhibition's excellent catalogue was published by the Guggenheim. Amazon offers it for $40.

On the second segment, Lawrence W. Nichols discusses "Frans Hals Family Portraits: A Reunion," at the Toledo Museum of Art. It is the first exhibition devoted to Hals's family portraiture. The show was motivated  by Toledo's 2011 acquisition of Hals's Van Campen Family Portrait in a Landscape and the recent conservation of Hals's Three Children of the Van Campen Family at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. The Toledo and Brussels canvases were originally a single painting, separated for unknown reasons in either the late 18th or early 19th century. Toledo has reunited the two paintings for this show, along with a third, a fragment of a painting presently in a private collection. The exhibition is in Toledo through Jan. 6, 2019. The exhibition catalogue was published by Hirmer. Amazon offers it for $33.

Episode No. 359 features artists lauren woods and Eva Struble.

Artist lauren woods was scheduled to open American MONUMENT this week at the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach. woods "paused" American MONUMENT after CSULB fired UAM director and American MONUMENT curator Kimberli Meyer on September 11, just days before the project was set to open. American MONUMENT is an interactive sound installation that utilizes open records-sourced materials such as police reports.

On the second segment, artist Eva Struble discusses her work and her interest in California's migrant agricultural labor sector. Struble is one of 42 artists included in "Being Here with You/ Estando aquí contigo," which opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego this weekend.

Two-toned furniture makeover for the bathroom

Slow but sure I'm making changes/adding items to our "new" rooms in this house that make it feel more and more like us. It's been SO much fun. :) I can't believe it's been nearly a year since we moved in!

I was thrilled last year when IKEA asked if I'd partner up with them to share some projects with you. I've always been a fan, even when I had to drive four hours round trip to get to the nearest store! I showed you our porch decorated for Christmas last year and today I'm excited to show you a pretty addition to our master bathroom. I just LOVE IT.

I gave you a tour of this room a few months ago and not much has changed. The wall to the left with the black shelves is the area I tackled recently:

As much as I love that bamboo piece (you can see how I made it into a bar cart here), it never felt substantial enough for that spot. 

Our storage in this bathroom isn't quite as plentiful as our old one. The linen closet is about half the size and I was a dummy and didn't do drawers in the vanities. That is one of the only regrets I have throughout the whole build!

SO. I've always known I wanted something with more storage here. I looked online for nearly a year for a secondhand cabinet I could transform. It had to have drawers and some shelves, and preferably some glass doors as well. I looked at Craigslist and the marketplace on social media and never found anything I liked. 

Enter IKEA...a couple months ago I was walking through and found exactly what I wanted. Well, near exact. It checked all of the boxes except for one -- the color. I wanted a true black. But I knew I could easily fix that (I was planning to paint a wood piece anyway). 

The HEMNES glass door cabinet was a perfect fit (not too deep for this spot) and offered all the storage I wanted! I had an idea in mind for the final finish, so I went with the wood version of this cabinet:

I thought it would take forever to put together but I was pleasantly surprised. I had it finished in about an hour. I'm getting really good at building those drawers! 

We actually quite liked the wood grain. My husband wanted to keep it this finish, but he knows how my brain works and knew I had a vision. ;) So I taped it off to start the painting process. (I had already secured it to the wall at the top -- I just added one line of painter's tape along the back so the paint wouldn't hit the wall.) 

I get this question every time I paint -- why not paint it all before you put it together? I never do that because inevitably something will get scratched in the build process. And there are some spots I don't think need to be painted. I don't do the backs of drawer fronts for example. I find it much easier to paint when it's all together.

Our must haves for any pet owner!

Hello there! If you've been reading for awhile you know I tend to have one of our fur babies (especially pics on Instagram) in photos quite a bit. We have three animals -- our two cats, Colby and Nya, and our dog, Peanut -- who tend to follow me around quite a bit.

I Had My First Mammogram

The dreaded mammogram - before I had one, I pretty much grouped that appointment in with getting my teeth drilled. Word on the street was, they are painful and you have a machine squeeze your boobs flat into pancakes. I'm assuming you men would put it right up there with a prostate exam.

After having my second child, I asked my OBGYN about getting one. At the time I was 39 with no history of breast cancer. I had to wait until I was officially 40. Well, 40 came and went. As did 41, 42, and 43. After throwing my back out earlier this year, I had to go to the doc for a follow-up. On the drive to the clinic, NPR was talking about breast cancer. In the waiting room, Oprah was on the TV discussing…wait for it…breast cancer. I sat in the waiting room by a bunch of mammograms and early detection brochures. Okay, okay already! I'll ask my doc to book the mammogram. Geez! I hear ya universe, loud and clear.

 

 

My primary gave me a work order to book a boob pancake, and I sat on it for another month until the morning news health report was on…you guessed it…breast cancer. Gah, where did I put that order? After searching stacks of mail, I found it in my closet, crumpled up and stashed in a purse I had swapped out. I called and got in the next morning at 6am.

After hanging up the phone, anxiety kicked into high gear. My mind was racing with thoughts about psychic signs and Oprah, brochures and chemo treatments. Suddenly, I swore I could feel itching in my left boob. BTDubs, don't Google that symptom because the interwebs just tells you, you most certainly have breast cancer. I couldn't sleep.

5:15am I yanked myself outta bed and made my way over to the hospital. I hate hospitals. All I can think about are tubes and liquids and people dying. PTSD from the whole dead sister debacle. My anxiety was peaking to a level of panic attack. I had a sudden case of the 3 P's: poop, puke, or pass out. (The easiest way to relieve yourself of a panic attack.) Unfortunately, because I was standing in the lobby, waiting in line, none of those were viable options. I took a deep breath and clenched my butt cheeks as tight as I could.

All I could think about was my old prescription of Lorazepam in my other purse. It could have come in handy. In retrospect, my apprehension was extreme and dramatic, to say the least. I was literally walking in for an x-ray and nothing more. I had taken this mammogram to a level of crazy.

The receptionist handed me one of those buzzer things you get while waiting for a table at Chilis. If you suffer from anxiety, you probably understand the 3 P's quite well. It's difficult to talk them down. There was a Starbucks in the lobby which looked fairly empty. I had no idea where the bathroom was located and didn't want my buzzer and red lights to start going off. I walked over to the garbage can and passed some much-needed gas. Oh dear lord there was a sofa behind that trash can! Someone is sitting in said sofa. Walk away…but I had opened the gates. How does someone have this much air in their body??? My buzzer started going off.

 

 

I made the walk of stinky shame over to check in and wound up backtracking thru again to get to the breast center. Oy vey. At least the panic attack had "vaporized". At the breast center, they had me change into a mauve colored wrap shirt with pink ties and sit in another smaller waiting room. Two other ladies, with matching shirts, looked up and then back down to the floor. Oprah was on the TV again talking about…you guessed it…breast cancer. *palm to forehead*.

No more than 5 minutes later, my name was called, and I walked into a dark room with a chair, a small sink and a very large machine for which I assumed to be the pancake maker. I was sweating profusely and felt very stinky. No, not from farting but rather BO. The one no-no before a mammogram is to wear deodorant. Also no oils, no lotions. Since I had an early morning appointment, I figured I'd take the extra 30 minutes of sleep and take a shower when I got home. Bad idea.

The tech put on blue gloves and asked me to stand by the giant boob mashing machine. She lifted one up onto this little shelf and clamped it down. "Don't breath. Don't move." I held my breath waiting for the pancake of pain. The boob masher went buzz, buzz and she said, "Okay, you can breathe now." Wait, wut??? THAT was what I was afraid of??? THAT is what made this morning so dramatic??? Srsly?

She did the second boob and sent me home on my merry way. The radiologist would review the mammogram and get back to my doctor in 2 days. As I walked back to the car I just shook my head. I couldn't believe how I had stunk out the entire lobby of a hospital and sweat through my mauve gown. A complete and utter overreaction to such a simple procedure.

Two days later, I got a call I wasn't expecting. The radiologist had found microcalcifications and wanted me to come back for a follow-up mammogram. So what is the first thing you should do after hearing that news? You Google it, of course. Gah….NO! DO NOT DO THAT. But of course, I did it anyway. The page was filled with words like cancer, breast, precancerous, calcium deposits, genetic mutation, tissue, benign, malignant, signs of breast cancer, mayo clinic, Susan G. Komen, not cancerous, turns into cancer, suspicious, biopsy. Basically none of the words you ever want to read, ever.

My doctor called that same night around 7pm. She told me not to worry. (In my head I'm thinking lady, you're telling me don't worry but you're calling me personally for the first time ever. Way to put my mind at ease.) Microcalcifications were described to me as a cloud that was difficult to see through. Since this was my baseline mammogram, they had nothing to compare it to, and the radiologist just wanted to take a few more images at different angles…basically to see if anything else was hiding in there.

Again I drove over to the hospital, but this time no panic attack. I checked in and waited. This appointment was later in the day so there was more hustle and bustle…I also learned from my previous mistake and took a shower this time. A few guys sat in the waiting room just staring at the floor. I was unsure if they were patients or sweet husbands waiting for their wives. When the nurse called me in, I changed into my mauve gown with pink ties and again took a seat with the other ladies. They were all quite older than me. Then this started happening.

HOSPITAL INTERCOM: "Attention please. Stroke alert. Emergency."

One of the men from the main waiting room sat with us ladies…he was not wearing a mauve gown, and instantly, the air was filled with awkwardness. The older ladies started shifting around in their seats, staring at each other in a full-blown silent tizzy. Now if these women felt uncomfortable, I can only imagine how the poor guy felt. The nurse shooed him out the main waiting room and apologized to us profusely. I chuckled when the older woman named Pearl said, "Heavens, I didn't know if I should even make eye contact with him!"Oh Pearl. I'm not sure what she thought would happen. But who was I to judge, I nearly shat my pants a few days prior.

HOSPITAL INTERCOM: "Attention please. Security emergency. ICU 366."

I was in and out of the boob mashing room in a jiffy, but unlike last time, I had to stick around. The radiologist was going to review the new images right then and there. I sat back down in the little room with all the other ladies and their mauve wraps. They looked at me and knew this was not normal protocol. Coral stood up and used her walker to make her way over to me.

"I like your shoes," she said.
"Thanks"
"They look comfortable. It's difficult to find sandals that are comfortable."

I nodded.
This was going to be the longest 15 minutes of my life.

"Ya, these have a cork bottom, so they kinda mold to your foot."
"Who makes those sandals?"
"Birkenstock."
"Oh, I should have known they were Birkenstocks. I like my Merrills. They have a lot of support."
"Ya, Merrills are great shoes."

HOSPITAL INTERCOM: "Attention please. Missing person. 402. male. Blue shirt."

Coral looked at her walker. We didn't have much else to say to each other. I texted my husband and Marianne. I scrolled through Twitter. I laughed out loud when I saw @wofanswers  "A     _ R _ _ P    _ _   _ _ _ S"   The answer: A GROUP OF TITS. That tweet couldn't have been any more fitting for the occasion. Coral looked at me inquisitively, but I could possibly explain Twitter to her. Besides, Pearl might have gone into cardiac arrest.

The nurse called me back, but this time into a different small room. If you've read the dead sister debacle, you know how I hate small rooms in hospitals. Bad news is relayed in small dimly lit rooms. She took a deep breath. Oh boy. I braced myself for the "C" word. "The radiologist is in the middle of a biopsy, and it's taking longer than expected. I didn't want you to worry." Sweet Baby Jesus lady. You about gave me a heart attack woman.

HOSPITAL INTERCOM: "Attention please. Stroke alert. Emergency."

I waited about another 20 minutes and was finally called back. Coral gave me the thumbs up. I smiled and said, "thank you". The nurse had me sit down and the radiologist followed behind us. It's funny, I have absolutely no idea what she said. It started off with microcalcifications can be…and then everything went slightly foggy until I heard, "It's probably nothing, but since this is your baseline and we have nothing to compare it to, I'm asking you to come back in 6 months." That's it? "Yup, That's it."

HOSPITAL INTERCOM: "Attention please. Security emergency. ICU 366."

So for now, I'm fine. Panic-free and feeling great. I'm glad I finally had a mammogram. Relieved actually. If you haven't had a mammogram, are procrastinating, or just need to make your yearly appointment…please do it now. This is your reminder. Your sign. It's not that bad, and it will put your mind at ease. If you're dragging your feet because you're anxious, hopefully, me sharing my experience puts your mind at ease.

If you're one of those ladies who received the news I feared, I'm praying for you. I can't imagine how scared you are. I wish you strength.
